I tested a cheap and an expensive refractive liquid on my refractometer to see if it makes any difference. The cheap brown bottle came with the instrument, while the expensive Gem-A one cost as much as the refractometer itself. Quartz showed no difference. Moissanite (over the limit) did, 1.78 with the expensive liquid vs 1.772 with the cheap one. White labradorite and synthetic ruby both read the same. So both work, but the pricier one is safer thanks to its screw-on cap and can reach slightly higher readings, useful when working near 1.78.
