Intra-abdominal sepsis (IAS) is a serious infection that occurs when the contents of the abdomen spill into the peritoneum. It's the second most common type of sepsis, after pulmonary sepsis, and is often treated in intensive care units. IAS can be caused by a number of conditions, including: Perforated peptic ulcer Diverticulitis Appendicitis Iatrogenic perforation Post-operative infection Anastomic leak Abdominal trauma IAS can lead to septic shock and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Symptoms of severe sepsis include: Dizziness or fainting Mental confusion or disorientation Diarrhea Nausea and vomiting Slurred speech Severe muscle pain Severe breathlessness Decreased urine production Rapid diagnosis and treatment are critical to patient survival. Treatments include: broad-spectrum antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, invasive monitoring, and percutaneous or operative source control.
