An Unexpected Wilderness - KELLY'S RUN - Scenic Pennsylvania

At the heart of Kelly's Run Nature Preserve in Lancaster County, lies a wild and scenic stream of rushing water, weaving its way through a massive jumble of moss covered boulders on its path to the Susquehanna River. Here, one is struck, by the thick jumbles of rhododendron, towering canopy of massive trees, and abundant wild flowers, ferns, and dense foliage. The scene feels simply out of place in the heart of the traditional farm lands and open fields so well associated with Lancaster County. Small waterfalls, cascades, and pools of crystal clear water are found in abundance here in a scene that would appear more suited to the rugged forested mountains to the north and west. On this hike I park at the famous Pinnacle Overlook on the mighty Susquehanna River and then follow the hillside south along the rocky and challenging Conestoga Trail - with some impressive views and features of its own - down to the mouth of Kelly's Run. From there I make my way slowly up through the heart of the Kelly's Run Gorge, basking in the sights and sounds of this unique and fabulous location.
