Irish immigrants fought everywhere in the Union Army and their stories are far more complicated than popular memory allows. In this episode of Public History with Justin, Jake, and Molly, Jake Wynn is joined by historian, archaeologist, and podcaster Damian Shiels for a wide-ranging conversation about Irish service in the Civil War–era United States Army and the long research journey behind Damian’s new book, Green and Blue: Irish Americans in the Union Military, 1861–1865. Drawing on pension files, soldiers’ letters, and overlooked working-class records, Jake and Damian dig into the everyday realities of immigrant service - why men enlisted, how class and economics shaped their decisions, and why Irish-born soldiers served throughout the army rather than in a handful of famous ethnic units. The discussion moves beyond the Irish Brigade to examine bounties, substitutes, late-war enlistment, and the persistent myth of the so-called “bad” soldier. This episode also explores pension files as one of the richest - and most underused - sources in telling the story of the Civil War, revealing how veterans and their families narrated service, injury, and survival long after the war ended. Along the way, the conversation turns outward to public history, podcasting, and how the American Civil War is remembered and misunderstood on both sides of the Atlantic. 📘 Green and Blue: Irish Americans in the Union Military, 1861–1865 — available now: https://lsupress.org/9780807183700/gr... 🎙️ Listen to Damian Shiels on the Transatlantic Podcast: https://shows.acast.com/transatlantic 📝 Read more at Damian’s Irish in the American Civil War blog: https://irishamericancivilwar.com/ 🔔 Subscribe for more conversations on public history and the Civil War ⭐ Like and comment to help more listeners find it #PublicHistory #CivilWarHistory #IrishAmericanHistory #Immigration #ImmigrantHistory
