Just send me an email: Silke@aichhorn.de :-) Aus dem Album "Miniaturen 4" Winning a harp prompted John Thomas (1826-1913) to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he also worked as a professor after completing his studies. He has traveled throughout Europe as a harpist, visited the United States and held the prestigious post of Harpist of the Queen. He composed symphonies, operas, cantatas and a large number of pieces for his instrument. At the same time, the harpist was one of the leading figures in 19th-century Welsh folk culture. He played a particularly important role in the revival of the “Eisteddfods”. In the Middle Ages, these were professional meetings of the Welsh bards, which were linked to a ritual competition in the manner of the Meistersingertreffen. In the 16th century, the Eisteddfods degenerated into a kind of trade association congress and served not least to rid the principality of Wales of "vagabond and idle persons who call themselves minstrels, verse-makers and bards". So in a way they were directed against amateur musicians. After that, the Eisteddfods fell into oblivion. They reemerged as music and literary competitions in the early 19th century with the rise of Welsh nationalism. John Thomas himself won the competition of an eisteddfod on the triple harp at the age of 12, and subsequently took part as a player or a member of the jury. In 1852 he was appointed chief bard. In this capacity he ensured that these traditional Welsh events were expanded into choir festivals. He made a significant contribution to the fact that they are still held today at the local, national and now also international level to collect and cultivate Welsh folklore. In the English "exile" he occupied himself with the collection of old Welsh music and the stimulation of new music. In 1862 he organized the first concert in London, where only music from his homeland was played. He also composed such music himself, including a setting of the famous tune David of the white rock. Dafydd Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen, which means "white rock". It is said that on his deathbed, Dafydd asked for his harp and composed this tune there with the request , they may play it at his funeral and hang the harp over his grave.
