In the SLT seminar, Jesse Hoogland from Timaeus talks to us about his research agenda applying singular learning theory to AI safety. Abstract: Singular learning theory (SLT) identifies the geometry of the loss landscape as key to understanding neural networks. In this talk, I will explore applications of this framework and perspective for interpretability, alignment, and other areas of AI safety. This will begin with an introduction to the basics of the theory, followed by a survey of recent empirical progress in using SLT for understanding neural networks.
