A walk along the River Arun to South Stoke and Arundel Park

Join us on a walk along the River Arun from just north of Arundel to the hamlet of South Stoke. From here we make our way along the lanes towards Offham before retracing our steps to South Stoke and climbing to the top of Arundel Park to enjoy the far-reaching views. We start our walk on the public footpath adjacent to Arundel Lawn Tennis Club which heads towards the river. The weather starts bright and clear with a spectacular sunrise, but is quickly followed by patchy cloud and banks of mist and fog rolling in. We follow the west bank of the river as it meanders its way northward. With the wetlands centre nearby, there is plenty of aerial activity in the form of geese, gulls and egrets. We also saw a surprising number of herons on the opposite bank. The path goes through the grounds of the Black Rabbit public house after which it becomes rather less well-trodden until reaching the farm at Offham (beware of cattle!). On to South Stoke, and it is the 11th century church of St Leonard's that is undoubtedly the focal point of this tiny hamlet. The church was altered in the 13th century and underwent significant changes in the 19th century - as did many under the Victorians. Following the lane out of South Stoke (there is only one!) we made our way to the even smaller hamlet of Offham. From here is possibly to return to the river bank or head back to the Back Rabbit. We decided to retrace our steps to South Stoke and take the footpath that takes us in a generally northerly direction. The path runs between the river and the boundary wall of Arundel Park. Some way along here, there is a pedestrian gated entrance in the wall which provides a challenging, but rewarding, walk to the top Arundel Park. The views from and within the park are both extensive and beautiful. It is possible to see the footbridge at South Stoke, and beyond is Houghton bridge and Amberley in one direction, with the downs north of Worthing visible in the other direction. Heading south through the park, there are expansive views of Littlehampton and the English Channel beyond, as well as Hiorne Tower. We complete our walk via Arundel town. We hope you enjoyed watching as much as we enjoyed walking. John & Diana
