Honen Sai Matsuri (Fertility Festival) of Tagata Shrine in Komaki-City, a Shocking but Traditional Fertility Festival The festival is held every March 15, and in it a phallus, newly carved every year from Japanese cypress and more than 60 cm in diameter and 2 m long, is carried on a portable shrine by parade men of a "unlucky age" and offered to said shrine with prayers for a good harvest, the flourishing of all natural things and prosperous descendants. The sight of all this has led to the proceedings' becoming widely known as one of the world's strangest festivals, and on the day the temple grounds are filled with visitors from Japan and overseas. Shinto shrines are found all over Japan and is a symbol of the people’s linkage to their community. Shrines serves as houses for divine spirits as well as places preserving memories and practices of Japanese culture. Based on the discovery in 1935 of an ancient sword and artifacts, Tagata Shrine is Estimated 1,500 years old. Located near the village Ajioka, the name “Agata” is thought to derived from one of the powerful Lords of late Yamato period (3rd-5th CAD) who helped to settle the area after moving here from Nara. Legend has it that his daughter Tamahime, was spoused to a local prince, Takeinadane. It seems that he died an untimely death in war, leaving his wife and two children that develop the surrounding areas, that is the Tagata Shrine. The phallic theme or representation are objects considered as offerings to deities, as objects of veneration and as a magical fetish. They are loaned to individuals searching for spouses, needing diseases cured, or wishing for a child. When the desired result was produced, the object is then returned to the shrine together with a new phallic symbol as a token of gratitude. They believe that this practice, as well as the Honen-sai Festival, is a survival of ancient and widespread ritual design to ensure agricultural regeneration. One of the most stable features of the history of Tagata Honen-Sai Festival is its goal of plentiful harvest each year.
