And I am not trying to give you false hope. I know how raw our emotions are when it comes to our beloved children with autism. I know how many options there are out there for helping our children, some good, some not so good. I understand the confusion and skepticism – is this another so-called “cure”? And I know how incredibly overwhelming this autism journey is. I know. I have been living it for almost thirteen years. My son with autism turns 15-years old next month and he was diagnosed just before he turned two. It’s exhausting. But here’s the thing. We search, we study, we look for answers. We leave no stone unturned. At least that’s what I have done with my autism journey for well over a decade. Did I find any answers? What I have discovered is nothing short of miraculous. But it’s not what you think. I don’t have a silver bullet. I have something far better. I have an autistic friend in Portugal. His name is João Carlos and he is 23-years old. He does not speak and outwardly, you would think he is severely impaired and not likely intelligent. But appearances are misleading… He began writing me letters three years ago and he has completely turned my world upside down. What I thought I knew about autism, about my son? Out the window. But his messages are not easy at first, to understand, because we think the answers should be complex. They are so above and beyond anything we think we know, and they are so crazy simple, it’s hard to believe the answers are true. When I first started conversing with João through letters, I felt his answers to be true, at the core of my being. Nothing rational can explain feelings or intuition, but we all know how powerful feelings are. João has been urging me for some time, to get his messages out to the world. And now is the time.
