Hugo Alfvén - Swedish Rhapsody No.1, Op.19 (Midsummer Vigil), Slovenian Symphony Orchestra, Anton Nanut (conductor) Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén (1872-1960) was born in Stockholm where he studied at the Conservatory and then became a violinist in the opera orchestra. He eventually became an important conductor of several choruses including the Siljan Choir and the Orphei Drängar (Initiates of Orpheus). He was also director of music at Uppsala University from 1910 until 1939. By the 1940s he had become the great figure of Swedish music, a pipe-smoking legend, honored with countless medals for his conducting and composing. He wrote a four-volume autobiography, which more than adequately fills in the details of his active life. Of the few pieces now still performed, his Midsummer Vigil, also known as the Swedish Rhapsody No.1, Op. 19, is the most often heard. It was written in 1903 when the composer was still young and establishing his reputation. Inspired by the joyous atmosphere found at St. John's Eve (which coincides with the summer solstice), it represents a programmatic description of a peasant wedding on the outer Stockholm archipelago. Alfvén effectively translates these images into sounds through brilliant orchestration, rhythmic energy of the polska, a Swedish folk dance, and catchy melodies, one of which is very familiar to us because of its use in cartoons and commercials.
