Today, I am thrilled to share with you a piece that rarely gets the attention it deserves: Ferenc Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 1. While many are familiar with the iconic Liebestraum No. 3, few know that there are actually three Liebesträume in the set, each capturing a different facet of love. Composed in 1850, Liszt’s three Liebesträume were originally songs for voice and piano, inspired by the poetry of Ludwig Uhland and Ferdinand Freiligrath. Each piece conveys a different type of love. Liebestraum No. 1, based on Uhland’s poem "Hohe Liebe" (Exalted Love), reflects on the pure, saintly love that transcends earthly desires. It’s a delicate and introspective piece, rich with spiritual warmth and serenity. What I find fascinating about Liebestraum No. 1 is its deep connection with the third Liebestraum. Both pieces share the same key and have similar harmonic language, yet they evoke completely different moods. Where No. 3 is grand and expressive, No. 1 is more introspective, with shorter, more improvisatory phrases that give it an almost ethereal quality. This connection between the two pieces creates a beautiful contrast, making Liebestraum No. 1 a gem worth discovering. Despite its subtlety, it possesses a unique charm that resonates deeply with me. I hope you enjoy my performance of this often overlooked masterpiece. Let me know in the comments how you feel about this piece and if you’ve noticed its connection to the famous Liebestraum No. 3. Thank you for joining me on this musical journey!
