Joseph Petric (accordion). Composed by Torbjörn Lundquist (1964). Recorded June / September 2021 at the studio of Peter Lutek (Toronto). Album Artwork by Andrew Zuckerman. Liner Notes by Nick Storring. The earliest work on the disc is also one of the earliest concert works for accordion. Torbjörn Lundquist's (1920–2000) exuberantly contrapuntal Metamorphoses of 1964, is the lone work that Petric did not commission. However, given his conscientious and dedicated interpretation of it, one would be forgiven for assuming that he had-especially since it aligns so strongly with his interests. It would be easy to envision another performer emphasizing the work's jagged atonality, but Petric's reading of it sings, finding breath and contour within its craggy surfaces. Lundquist is highly imaginative in his use of register and colour and Petric's careful shading of these sonorities-including the use of vibrato-makes them all the more vivid and sumptuous. Equally noteworthy is the composer's aesthetic pluralism. In addition to playing in Sweden's first jazz quintet, Lundquist conducted, composed for film as well as the concert hall, where he was known for re-imagining his works for different contexts. This spirit comes through in Metamorphoses. Amidst the work's opaque chromaticism the composer drops references to traditional Sámi lur (horn) music while unleashing driving 5/4 sections that seem to nod in the direction of Dave Brubeck's Take Five.
