Mourners pay respects to former Iranian leader

(9 Jan 2017) Mourners from all walks of life in Iran - from the country's president to passers-by on the street - paid their respects on Monday to the late Iranian leader Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani following his death over the weekend at the age of 82. Hundreds of people and officials attended a farewell ceremony to pay tribute to him, hosted by Rafsanjani's family at the house of the Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, whom Rafsanjani regarded as a role model and served as a close aide to for years. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi attended the ceremony, among others. The main funeral is to be held on Tuesday, and Rafsanjani's body will be buried at Khomeini's shrine south of Tehran.
