A short film showing Withypoole Herd 23 (yes, spelt 'Withypoole' for the herd prefix), the oldest family-owned herd of Exmoor ponies in the world, being gathered in from Withypool Common in Exmoor National Park, in October 2020. Exmoor ponies are one of the UK's most ancient native pony breeds - and they are an endangered breed. Each and every Exmoor pony is important. They are strong, intelligent, well-conformed and beautiful - robust, resilient, charismatic, independent-thinking and they have survived and thrived in their semi-feral, free-living Exmoor herds for centuries. Each autumn, after the herds are gathered, the foals are weaned (separated) from the mares and inspected and registered. Some of the filly foals return to the moor and perhaps a colt will be identified to run on as a potential stallion for the future. However, the rest of the colts and filly foals must find new opportunities off the moor. It is desirable that the foals go to their new homes as soon as possible. When carefully and sensitively socialised to human contact, they adapt very well to life off the moors and make both fantastic ridden and performance ponies - as well as outstanding conservation grazers. Withypoole Herd 23 is owned by the Milton family, and runs on both Withypool and Anstey Commons in Exmoor National Park. The Milton family work with other dedicated Exmoor herd owners in the Moorland Exmoor Pony Breeders Group (MEPBG) to safeguard and preserve the indigenous Exmoor ponies of Exmoor National Park.
