It was formerly called Schönhauser Tor and is located at the foot of Schönhauser Allee, at the corner of Torstraße. The color of the station is yellow. History Built in 1913 and designed by Alfred Grenander, the station bears its original name of "Schönhauser Tor" (English: Schönhausen Gate). In 1934 the name was changed to "Horst-Wessel-Platz" (English: Horst Wessel Square), named after the Nazi Party stormtrooper Horst Wessel who died on 23 February 1930. On 16 April 1945, this station was totally destroyed in Battle of Berlin. After the war in 1945 the name was reverted to its original. In 1950 it was renamed to Luxemburgplatz (Luxemburg Square) and finally in 1978 it was renamed to Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz to avoid confusion with the country. Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz was named after the Polish-German revolutionary communist, Rosa Luxemburg in 1969. Specifications The station is 813 meters from the Alexanderplatz and 595 meters from the Senefelderplatz stations respectively. The central platform is 7.6 meters wide and 110.1 meters long, while the hall is 2.7 meters high. Due to its small depth beneath the pavement of four meters, it is classified as an Unterpflasterbahn Station. A lift was added to the station in 2023 to improve accessibility. Eberswalder Straße is an overground station located on the U2 line of the Berlin U-Bahn network. It is located in the Prenzlauer Berg area of the city on Schönhauser Allee, a major street running from the city centre north towards Pankow. The station is a raised iron structure on stone columns, designed by architect Alfred Grenander. History The station opened in 1913 as Danziger Straße. It was severely damaged in December 1943 and was also closed during the last months of World War II. The post-war division of Berlin put it in the Russian sector. In 1950 it was renamed Dimitroffstrasse, in honour of Bulgarian communist leader Georgi Dimitrov who had died in the previous year. In 1991, following the reunification of Germany, the station's name was changed in order to remove its political links. The station was named Eberswalder Straße, a street that crosses Schönhauser Allee very nearby. A local landmark below the elevated tracks at the south end of the station is Konnopke's Imbiß, a well-known fast food stand that sells currywurst. Max Konnopke started selling sausages on the same spot in 1930 from a board strapped around his neck. In 1960 he built the hut that served as the food stand until replaced by a new construction in 2011. U2 is a line of the Berlin U-Bahn. The U2 line starts at Pankow S-Bahn station, runs through the eastern city centre (Alexanderplatz) to Potsdamer Platz, the western city centre (Wittenbergplatz, Zoologischer Garten, Theodor-Heuss Platz) and finally to the Ruhleben terminal station. The U2 has 29 stations and a length of 20.7 kilometers (12.9 mi). Together with the U1, U3, and U4 lines, it was part of the early Berlin U-Bahn network built before 1914.
