Blast fishing used to be really common in El Salvador's Jiquilisco Bay Biosphere Reserve. But the practice came at a cost — fisherfolk were losing their limbs when the explosives were going off prematurely and fish populations were rapidly declining. One day, a disenchanted fisherman proposed an alternative: artificial reefs. The idea was to attract fish into the bay so fishermen could switch to line-and-hook fishing. These days, blast fishing has dropped by 90 percent. But it hasn't always been easy to make this shift.
