In this video, I break down sociology and sociological imagination to explain why no one truly chooses their reality. Our choices don’t exist in a vacuum they’re shaped by history, systems, and social structures long before we’re born. Using sociological theory, I discuss research on Black consumer behavior, specifically why name brand goods have historically mattered, and how this connects to status, safety, and systemic inequality. I then introduce the idea of intergenerational and epigenetic trauma, showing how collective experiences can influence behavior across generations Marketing to Heterogeneous Black Consumers (1974) by authors Thomas Barry & Michael Harvey Sociologist C. Wright Mills (1916-1962) created the concept and defined it as “the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society.” It is the ability to look at something with fresh yet critical eyes. To Mills, his concept of the sociological imagination could bring people together so they could change the concept of a personal challenge, like homelessness, and make it a public issue. Thanks to my Sociology / crimes against humanity teacher that I learned about this and made this video . Lowkey am not the best at explaining but I tried .
