I finally bit the bullet and got myself a canoe, and figured why not get something the heart wants? The heart wanted a Northstar with the BlackLite layup, either the Northwind 17 or B17. I settled on the B17 due to its higher stability and higher payload capacity, and was able to find one not too far away with internal skid plates and aluminum trim. This canoe has a rounded hull that has less "initial stability" or "primary stability" which makes it feel tippy when getting in, and when sitting still. However, it has more "secondary stability" which means as it rolls, it maintains more contact with the water and is less likely to actually tip. This is a concept you can hear all about, but you don't truly understand it until you've actually felt it. The prior 2 trips with this canoe ended poorly, and I was feeling pretty bad about my decision to go with a boat that would be more challenging. Not willing to give up that easy, I made sure to take it out with a friend that I'll be in the canoe with on an upcoming BWCA trip for 9 days and 75 miles, to see how he feels in it, and whether or not we both feel confident enough to take it on that trip. We wanted wind and waves as we wanted to understand its behavior in rough water (any canoe is tame in calm water) so we were happy about the moderate winds. We left feeling much better about the canoe and our ability to paddle it safely and confidently after testing all sorts of maneuvers. I can't wait to get more experience in the canoe and I'm really looking forward to my upcoming BWCA trips with it. Let me know if you have any questions about the B17, and thanks for watching!! -JD Instagram: / technically_rugged Chat with me and others on my Discord server! / discord ------- 0:00 - Intro 1:13 - Intended tests 3:41 - Gettin our sea legs 7:13 - JD in the bow 9:16 - Summary 10:08 - Conclusion and sunset
