Sunningdale (Old): Sunningdale Golf Club’s Old course is widely considered the best Heathland course in the world. It is hard to describe the feeling but when you arrive and the gates open at Sunningdale, an overwhelming sensation of joy and peace seems to overcome you, and you know you are instore for something special. Designed by Willie Parker and Harry Colt it is flawless golf experience that opened in 1901 and is amongst the first successful golf courses built away from the seaside. The Old course is routed through a dense mature English Forest over undulating heathland terrain in the famous Surrey/Berkshire sand belt. The course feels grand yet elegant at the same time. While most fairways are tree lined the fairways are wide with little to no rough and the only true danger of this course as with most Heathland courses is the heather and gorse and at Sunningdale the plentiful bunkers. The course is flawless from hole one to eighteen and a definite contender for any serious golfer's bucket list Sunningdale (New): Sunningdale New may be considered the second-best course on the property, but it is not a second-tier course. The new course, designed by Harry Colt, feels and plays differently than the Old course. The New course is more rugged, boasts fewer bunkers, and has a wider fair. While the new course offers more generous openings for the driver, it has more heathland and dangerous carries to navigate. The New course was my second favorite course from my trip and is considered the second best inland course behind the Old course. If a golfer is presented with an opportunity to play the New course and cannot play the Old course, take the opportunity to experience the new course. You will be more than happy with the New course. The Berkshire (Red): The Berkshire is a masterful golf club in Ascot, England, with two 18 holes courses. The Herbert Fowler designed Red course meanders over undulating heathland terrain with dramatic elevations over beautiful Heathland. The unique aspect of this course is the layout six par 3s, six par 4s, and 6 par fives. The routing produces more scoring opportunities and was overall a lot of fun. The par 4s were challenging with many being short with great risk reward opportunities, the Par 5s create many eagle/birdie opportunities and the par 3s while many long were all unique and challenging. The green complexes were not overly complicated but required good shots or risk treacherous bunkers. The course is beautiful, fun, and not overly complicated. It is worth noting that The Berkshire has a great all-weather covered range with grass tees and a very good short game area. The Berkshire (Blue): The Berkshire Blue is a fun, solid course at the Berkshire and an excellent accompanying course to the Red course. TheBossGolfs prefers the Red course for its undulating terrain and unique layout. The Red course's layout was more fun and had more scoring opportunities; that said, the blue course has a lot of character. The Blue course starts off in front of the dining room patio, with a long par 3 (210+) over heather to an elevated green that any short or right misses will result in an over 30 foot drop down a hill. The course is generally a bit more open, has a few fewer bunkers, and slightly overly flatter terrain. The greens were more undulating than the Red course, and the Blue course felt longer than the Red. Overall, The Berkshire is a very good club, a lot of fun, and a great host to outside golfers. Swinley Forest: Swinley Forest is a beautiful and truly unique course and club in the famous Surrey/Berkshire sand belt. Swinley is a truly fun golf experience with a course that is genuinely remarkable. Designed by Harry Colt, who is quoted as saying Swinley Forest is his “ least bad course." While not as posh as other courses reviewed by TheBossGolf on this trip, Swinley has a distinctive style of its own. The 6400 yards and par 68 course is a distinctive design. Swinley felt more natural, with its undulating fairways terrain, elevated tee shots and twisted and rippled fairways. The course maxed out at 6400 yards and is deceptively longer than one would expect for a par 68. Members of this course seemed more relaxed and had a more enjoyable time than other courses played in England. Swinley is a definite must-play when you are in England.
