Jordan Belson, Séance (excerpt)

An excerpt from Belson's film Séance completed in 1959. We post only excerpts as he did not want his films placed online. Belson was extremely concerned with proper display conditions for his films, in dark environments. He was also completely opposed to changing the music or soundtracks to his films. The soundtrack here is "Études aux allures" by Pierre Shaeffer. We honor his wishes by only screening his films with their original soundtracks. This film was not screened at the legendary Vortex Concerts (1957-59), despite bad info posted online. Those concerts ended in February 1959, and this film was completed later that year. In an interview with CVM's Cindy Keefer, Belson described the making of this film, and that in a later performance in 1959 Belson tried pairing this same soundtrack with footage for another film he was working on, later finished as Allures. CVM has restored, digitized and screened Belson's films for over 20 years, working closely with him until his death, with the originals he deposited at our archive. We've presented special Retrospectives of his films (restored, with many 16mm prints) at museums worldwide, in New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and other venues.
