A pregnancy condition that occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall. It can cause premature birth. Placenta usually detaches from uterine wall after childbirth, but with placenta accreta, part or all of the placenta remains attached. This can cause heavy vaginal bleeding after delivery (postpartum hemorrhage). Grades: accreta: Chorionic villi attach to myometrium. increta: Chorionic villi invade into myometrium. percreta: Chorionic villi penetrate through perimetrium (uterine serosa). Symptoms: Often no signs or symptoms during pregnancy, although vaginal bleeding during the third trimester might occur. Diagnosis: Ultrasound Color Doppler imaging (Findings) Loss of retroplacental hypoechoic clear zone. Loss of bladder wall-uterine interface. Presence of placental lacunae (vascular spaces). Presence of hypervascularity of the interface between uterine serosa and bladder wall. Causes: Abnormalities or scarring in the lining of uterus, typically caused by a C-section or other uterine surgery. Risk factors: Previous uterine surgery: Number of C-sections or other uterine surgeries. Placenta position: Low implantation (placenta previa, low-lying placenta). Maternal age: More common in women older than 35. Previous childbirth: Increases as number of pregnancies increases. Treatment: It is likely to take an early C-section delivery followed by surgical removal of uterus (hysterectomy).
