Transgender in India: A Dance/Movement Therapy Moment

“Hermaphrodite, Homosexual, Eunuch, It. These are all names she has been called. Sonia, my transgender client, was sitting in my movement therapy sessions and screams out ‘God, why did you make me this way?’” Hijras, who are individuals best described as transgender in western terminology, experience ongoing social pressure in India, pressure that is felt and lived out in the body. Through facilitated movement and vocal exploration, one member of the Hijra community finds an outlet for expressing deeply felt anger and sorrow. Reetu Jain is a movement therapist & facilitator, certified under Tripura Kashyap in New Delhi, India (recognized by CID-Unesco.) In 2014 she co-founded the Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI) to professionalize and expand DMT/CMT within India. She has facilitated over 200 hours of Creative Movement Therapy (CMT) with various target groups, such as the hijra/transgender community (Mitr Trust, Delhi), street children (CORP, Mumbai), high school and college students (Amity University, Noida), social sector leaders (Kanthari, Thiruvananthapuram and Dasra, Mumbai), private sector (Kantaar, Hyderabad) and the general public (open workshops). She co-developed a gender curriculum through CMT to bridge the gender gap within Indian society, focusing on various topics such as body image, gender roles, feminine/masculine energies and public space sexual harassment, etc. Reetu represented the expressive arts field at the Harvard South Asia Institute “Gender Justice, Criminal Law and Curricular Reforms” conference in July 2013, the Ananta Centre (formerly Aspen Institute India) “The Catalyst Conference: Igniting Leadership to End Sexual Violence” in April 2014, and the Coalition’s “TC/2” creative entrepreneurship conference in Feb 2015. She has trained, instructed and performed internationally for over 30 years as a dancer. Her dance repertoire includes Indian classical, Indian and Ugandan folk, Bollywood, American Tribal Style and tribal fusion belly dance.
