This is the twelfth part of my singlehanded Round Britain trip in my 32ft Westerly Fulmar "Concerto" that was built in 1980. This part starts leaving Dale, for Padstow, round Lands End to Newlyn, then to Brixham and Poole before finishing in The Hamble. On the section of the trip, I passed The Lizard which meant I had rounded all of the extremities of the United Kingdom, except Soay in St Kilda, due to weather conditions. Left Dale at 7.30 with full sail. As I left the shore, the speed over the ground increased to 6 knots. Later the wind increased, and I had to double reef. Being on a beam reach, the speed increased to 7 knots. Later the wind dropped and changed direction, taking me on to a broad reach and finally a dead run. Arriving in the River Camel to clear the bar and headed for Padstow. The inner harbour was open, and I was directed to moor on the wall by the Old Custom House pub. Leaving at a civilised 9am to round Land’s End for Newly, I realised this was day 100 of my trip. There was no wind, but after an hour, a light breeze developed just off the port bow, so I raised the mainsail. Later the wind moved further aft, so unfurled the genoa but still needed to keep old faithful (engine) running. Approaching Land’s End, the wind dropped so rolled the genoa away. I arrived off Land’s End and turned east towards home. The wind changed and I managed to start sailing at 5½ knots plus ½ knot of tide. Alas it was short lived, before old faithful was switched on again. Passing the Minnack Theatre, I could just hear the orchestra rehearsing. Shortly before sighting Newlyn, the ferry from the Isles of Scilly passed. The following day I looked round Newlyn, expecting to leave the following day. However, a SE gale was forecast for the next few days, so departure was delayed. It was windy and the waves hitting the harbour were spectacular. Due to the delay, I headed the 90 miles straight to Brixham to regain some lost days. The wind had changed to a southerly 5 to 7 and later veering to SW. Slipping out of the berth at 7.50, it did not look very nice, but I decided to give it a try. I double reefed the mainsail as it was too tight to sail to The Lizard, so I motor sailed the 15 miles. An intense rain shower flattened the sea surface. It took 3½ hours to reach The Lizard and the weather improved. The change of course allowed me to unfurl the genoa with a single reef on a close reach and I could turn off old faithful. The wind increased again with a rain shower making me reef further. I saw a rainbow ahead and shortly after that a flash of lightening struck about a mile away. The conditions could be a described as lively. The wind gradually eased to force 6 and later to a 5 but the speed was always reading 7 knots or more. Finally arriving at 11.50 and headed straight to bed. The following day the Queen died, and I stayed aboard. The next day I used my electric bike to visit Berry Head and Dartmouth. I slipped out of the berth at 9.40 to head across Lyme Bay to arrive at Portland Bill at slack water and then continue on to Poole. Under full main and genoa, with slightly cracked sheets and doing about 6½ knots. The sea was relatively calm and the sun was out. The wind backed slightly about 15 miles from Portland Bill and had to come hard on the wind, but ended up about 2 miles north of track and had to tack to pass Portland Bill. Then heading to St Albins Head and Anvil Head. By the time I rounded these it was dark and both of them were very rough and I had green water on the coachroof. Sheets were now eased, heading for Poole Yacht Club. There was no one to allocate a berth, so I just found an empty one and was tied up at 11.05. I had a lazy time in Poole. The trip to the Solent was a short one for me and I slipped the berth at 9.10 and after leaving Poole Harbour I set full sail on a close reach. At Hurst Castle it turned into a beat, but when I was off Beaulieu the wind disappeared making me motor to Mercury Marina in The Hamble, arriving at 3.30. Concerto stayed in this berth for the next 12 days I was cycling the 8 miles to the Southampton Boat Show every day as I was helping out on the Westerly Owners Association stand and boat. Full detailed written account of this part of the trip starts here. https://forums.ybw.com/index.php?thre...
