It's December 19th, 2024. We've already experienced single digit temperatures at night with highs only in the teens (Fahrenheit). Those temperatures were coupled with winds between 20 and 30+ mph. That has been over a week ago now and the temperatures have been better since. Today's high temperature is 34ºF with an expected low of around 30ºF. So things have improved since that last cold front. Some of the bamboo did wind burn back during that cold front when we had the single digit temperatures with high winds. Others are not yet phased by what winter has brought so far. We usually don't get that cold until later on in the winter. There is still a lot more winter to come. Late January is usually when we have our coldest temperatures. It's usually around that time that the temperature can drop as low as -5ºF to -20ºF. I forgot to mention a detail about plant spacing when I was showing the new Phyllostachys parvifolia divisions I planted. I recommend staying 5 Ft apart on center when planting most species of bamboo. This gives the new divisions enough space to get established before they start competing with one another for water and other resources. The exception would be some of the smaller ground cover species which could be planted closer together.
