Athenry is a town in County Galway, Ireland, which lies 25 kilometres east of Galway city. Some of the attractions of the medieval town are its town wall, Athenry Castle, its priory and its 13th century Anglo-Norman street-plan. The town is also well known by virtue of the song "The Fields of Athenry" Athenry. You've heard of the fields of Athenry. But the gaffs are pretty nice as well. Located 25km east of Galway City, this medieval town has a wonderful community feel and a unique identity, given its rich history. North-west 12 miles (19 km) from Loughrea is the historic town of Athenry. The Dominican priory founded here in 1241 was an important house of the Order, in 1644 it had a brief revival as a university, but the buildings were soon to be destroyed by the Cromwellians. Interesting features are the rows of lancet windows in the nave and choir, the tomb recesses, the mural tablet in Latin, French and English (1682), and the large tomb of Lady M. Bermingham (1799) which occupies the centre of the chancel; the north transept has a beautiful arcade with trefoil-headed niches. Other points of interest at Athenry are the castle (1238), the market cross and part of the old town walls. Between Athenry and Galway city is the pleasant town of Oranmore, at the head of a creek that forms part of Galway Bay. The castle was built by the Earl of Clanricarde. History of Athenry The medieval town of Athenry began its existence with the erection of a castle by Meyler de Bermingham, 2nd Baron of Athenry in 1238. The Anglo-Normans first came to Ireland seventy years before with the approval of the King of England, Henry II. It was not until 1235 that Richard de Burgo led invasion resulted in the subjugation of the province of Connacht. While Athenry was experiencing its birth pangs, what was happening on the world stage? In 13th century Europe the struggle between the Papacy and the Monarchies continued with the Emperor, Fredrick II being excommunicated for a second time by Pope Gregory IX in 1239. The Mongal hordes under Genghis Khan overran China, Persia and Southern Russia and invaded Eastern Europe. At the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 in Scotland wrested her freedom from England. It was to be 250 years after the erection of Athenry Castle that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas, and 550 years after, in 1787, that Britain began to colonise the vast subcontinent of Australia as a penal settlement.
