The Creation Story in Old English — Genesis 1:1–2:3

The creation story from the book of Genesis (Gen 1:1–2:3) read aloud in Old English; Old English text prepared and translated by Munir William Fahmy (منير وليم فهمي) and read aloud by Joshua Tyra. This late 10th- or very early 11th-century translation by the English abbott Ælfric of Eynsham and his assistants is found in two manuscripts: one from the mid-11th century containing the Old English Hexateuch (the first six books of the Old Testament, Genesis through Joshua): the handsomely illustrated Cotton MS Claudius B. IV (British Library; the images of folio 4r reproduced here, including the illumination “God creates Adam with the animals looking on,” © The British Library Board); and one from the late 11th century containing the Heptateuch (the first seven books, including Judges), the rather plainer MS Laud Misc. 509 (Oxford, Bodleian Library). Munir’s Autobiography: Munir William Fahmy (منير وليم فهمي), age 19 at the time of this writing, is an Orthodox Coptic Christian young man residing in the governorate of Monufiyya, near Cairo, Egypt, where he is an English major at the University of Monufiyya. A student of Joshua Tyra, he is interested in all periods of English, as well as in Old Norse and other ancient languages. He particularly enjoys translating from Old English into Modern English and vice versa. He dreams of pursuing graduate degrees in English and of becoming a university professor. A note from Josh: I’d like to say a few words about my young collaborator on this video, Mr. Munir William Fahmy, age 19. Munir lives in the Monufiyya governorate of Egypt, just outside Cairo, where he is majoring in English at the University of Monufiyya. He is as proud of his Coptic Christian heritage and faith as he is of his native language, Arabic. It pleases Munir to call himself my student, but frankly, I can scarcely keep up with him: not only is he extraordinarily gifted at learning languages both ancient and modern, he also works very hard at it: he has taught himself to read and write Old English from various online resources, mostly using only his smart phone! In addition, he has started learning Old Norse, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, among others. For this video, Munir looked up all the long vowels and palatalized or dotted C’s and G’s for me, translated the entire text, and either chose or helped me choose the best Modern English gloss for every Old English word that appears on screen. He has written a short autobiography in both Old and Modern English, which you can read above.
