A brief definition of the medical model of disability, one of the key theories within the fields of Disability Studies and Critical SEN. Transcript: The medical model of disability has been the dominant point of view on disability for centuries. It focuses on diagnosing ever more conditions in individuals and coming up with ways to cure or ‘fix’ the individual. Moreover, rather than focusing on the individuals’ needs, it is purely focused on the impairment and the medical treatment of the impairment. Its followers believe that disabled people ‘suffer’ from their conditions and that in order for them to become part of society and lead a so-called normal life, they must be cured. If a cure is deemed not achievable, then the individual is taken away from society to an institution or a special school. Furthermore, believers in this model have created a huge variety of professions for themselves with the aim of curing or looking after disabled people. These include psychiatrists, SEND specialists, executives and workers in disabled charities, specialised therapists and service providers, and manufacturers of pharmaceuticals, prosthetics and implants, the vast majority of whom are not disabled themselves.
