Long before the rise of Eli Tomac to motocross and supercross world domination, his father, John Tomac, dominated the world of cross country and downhill mountain bike racing. The early and mid nineties were the heyday of the sport, even though mountain bike technology was nowhere near today's standards. John Tomac was a national cruiser BMX champion in 1986. Then he climbed on a road bike to win the national criterium championships, two years later, at the same time he was getting his feet wet in the mountain bike world. From 1990-93 he won three NORBA series cross country titles, and a bunch of downhill victories, too. Nobody before or since handled a mountain bike the way Johnny could. Four years after his 2000 retirement, he bolted a gigantic chainring onto his downhill rig and rode it to victory at Mammoth Mountain, California, before retiring for good. For Tomac though, "retirement," means running his successful mountain bike company, and watching Eli Tomac win supercross races all over the world. The two photos of Tomac at his house were taken by Nathan Gates.
