Gigafactory Texas! This is where Model Y’s, and Cybertruck production happens and in 2025, the Next Generation Car(s), Cortex 1 & 2, Cybercab & the Optimus Robot! Beautiful sunrise which reminds us the future for Tesla is bright, complicated and of course, exciting as the company shifts firmly towards physical AI and datacenters, autonomy and possibly embracing both on earth and off-world endeavors. So many disruptive, innovative and even audacious plans ahead, and a big part of that future is being built right here at Giga Texas. Timestamps: Drone flight overview with discussion & illustration: 0:06 to 5:19 Drone flight footage & infographics: 5:24 to 36:39 In the video introduction, I discuss a new structure under construction on the south end of the crash testing facility. This is a new Anthropomorphic Test Devices, or ATD, laboratory and is set to enhance Tesla's already world-class vehicle safety program, especially as the company gears up for the future of autonomous mobility. So, what exactly is an ATD? Anthropomorphic Test Devices, commonly known as crash test dummies, are sophisticated human surrogates equipped with hundreds of sensors like accelerometers and load cells. They simulate human responses—accelerations, forces, and deflections—during crashes, helping evaluate injury risks from frontal, side, or rollover impacts. Key types of ATDs or crash test dummies include the 50th percentile male—the most common—and the 5th percentile female, along with child sizes. But Tesla is pushing boundaries with advanced models like THOR, which stands for Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint. Developed by NHTSA, THOR offers superior biofidelity with over 150 sensors in newer models, capturing detailed data on brain, rib, and organ injuries. At Giga Texas, this new facility integrates seamlessly with the existing crash program. Did you know Tesla has vertically integrated by modifying drive motors and electrical systems to create in-house towing mechanisms for tests, including a 'flying floor' setup? Alongside the Fremont facility, this bolsters Tesla's safety innovations, as seen in recent Cybercab side-impact tests showing robust steel frames and castings. In summary, the ATD Lab addition elevates Giga Texas's role in pioneering safer autonomous driving. It's another step in Tesla's relentless pursuit of zero-fatality vehicles. Stay tuned for more updates—things are accelerating fast here in Austin! A few other highlights from today include: Cortex 2 now has about 150 Megapacks delivered & partially installed, with room for what I’m estimating could be an additional 100. If I am correct, this will bring the total for this datacenter to around 250, & with the other 140 already installed for Megapack #1 & the Cortex 1 datacenter on the S end of the factory, Giga Texas is rapidly becoming a huge battery storage location w/ potentially 400+ Megapacks! To power all this, the electrical switchyard is being expanded, with the 6th huge transformer nearly ready for delivery & crews installing footings for more A-frame structures. During my flight, I noticed a Cybercab entering into the Giga Texas production line exit this morning and many more castings have been made and temporarily stored on the east side of Casting. This includes all three that are used for the basic structure of the body that is part of the “unboxed” process”. We are just over 50 days from when initial production is expected to begin. With testing of the Cybercab in multiple states and cities, crash testing & evaluation work already completed, all these castings, & production line run through tests, we are getting very close to seeing many more of these around the factory!
