Beethoven - Sonata for Violin and Piano, No 10 in G major, Op 96 I Allegro moderato II Adagio espressivo III Scherzo: Allegro IV Poco allegretto Mr Leung Kin-fung, Violin Dr Cheng Wai, Piano Nearly a decade separated Beethoven’s composition of his last sonata for violin and piano and the preceding Kreutzer Sonata. The Tenth was composed for the leading French violinist Pierre Rode (1774-1830), who made a visit to Vienna in 1812. Rode was known for his gentle playing and refined tone, which was evidently taken into consideration when Beethoven wrote for him, since the sonata stands apart among all of Beethoven’s output for its contemplative tranquility and intimacy. It was first performed by Rode and the composer’s notable patron, friend and pupil, Archduke Rudolph (1788-1831), at the piano, and was published in 1816 after revision with dedication to the Archduke. The first movement sets the tone, beginning quietly with the violin initiating melodic fragments that engage the piano in expanding and interweaving dialogue. The mesmerising calmness of the expressive second movement eventually settles on an unstable dissonance, which leads directly into a scherzo abundant with sharp offbeat accents and a concise trio.
