This exploration of Mark 5 confronts us with one of Scripture's most dramatic encounters: Jesus meeting a demon-possessed man living among the tombs. What unfolds is far more than an ancient exorcism story, it's a vivid portrait of our own spiritual condition apart from Christ. The man's terrifying existence, enslaved by demonic forces, isolated from community, living among the dead while still breathing, represents the extreme end of what separation from God truly means. Yet the beauty of this passage lies in Jesus deliberately crossing the sea to reach this one tormented soul that everyone else had abandoned. The demons recognize Jesus immediately, falling before Him in complete surrender, not worship, but fear. There's no battle, no contest, only total capitulation before the Son of the Most High God. What strikes us most is the aftermath: the townspeople's response reveals two possible reactions to Jesus' power. Some, seeing the transformed man sitting clothed and in his right mind, beg Jesus to leave because His authority threatens their comfortable autonomy. But the healed man becomes the first missionary to Gentile territory, sent not to retreat into comfort with Jesus, but to go home and tell what the Lord has done. As we enter a new year, this passage challenges us to remember God's transforming grace in our own lives and realign ourselves to His mission. We're called not to drift aimlessly or live for our own convenience, but to be witnesses who go into enemy territory proclaiming the power of Christ. The question isn't what resolutions we'll make, but what we'll remember about God's glory and how we'll respond to His call to go and tell.
