(18 Oct 1999) English/Nat A fire, possibly started deliberately, in Pristina, Kosovo gutted a shop and destroyed the nearby television building. Assisted by locals, fire crews from the United Nations and the NATO-led Kosovo protection force brought the blaze under control and set up barricades around the damaged buildings. A NATO spokesman, Major Steven Noble, said it was possible that the fire was arson but he added that there was no clear motive for burning down the store, which sells audio tapes and compact discs. Fire crews were called to the blaze just after 2 a.m. (2400 GMT) which started in a music store. The flames quickly spread to a nearby television building where staff were inside - several people were said to have been injured. Both buildings were destroyed by the fire which took crews from the U-N and K-FOR two hours to get under control . Crew members said a NATO storage depot, with bottles of propane gas and possibly other explosive materials was very near to the fire inside the television building compound but, with the flames nearly doused, there appeared to be no additional danger of a blast. K-FOR spokesman, Major Stephen Noble, said the only people hurt were three NATO peacekeepers, who sustained cuts while breaking windows to escape the flames. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There were people in the building. We have had three minor casualties: one with very superficial burns to his back as he escaped from the fire; one to his hand as he punched out the window to get out of the building; and one to his head as he banged his head as he was coming out of the building." SUPER CAPTION: Major Stephen Noble, KFOR spokesman He said he couldn't rule out arson until an investigation was carried out. SOUNDBITE: (English) "At the moment, we do not suspect arson, although it would be wrong of me to speculate at the moment. The fire investigators will be looking into the incident and see if they can establish how the fire started." SUPER CAPTION: Major Stephen Noble, KFOR spokesman If it was deliberately set, the downtown blaze will be the worst case of arson since the end of fighting in Kosovo in June and the entry of the NATO-led peacekeeping force. Crime, some of it ethnically motivated in the aftermath of the Serb-Albanian conflict, is rife in Pristina and the rest of the province.
