What is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)? April is limb loss Awareness Month and Wednesdays are special because we challenge each other to wear orange to raise awareness for limb loss. Limb loss is associated with a significant impact on people's lives. When people go through the devastating process of limb loss, their mortality is as high as getting stage four cancer. Unfortunately, a large majority of the people who do get amputation will end up developing cardiovascular issues and their survival rates can be limited. People who get amputation at the toe are the same people who get ankle, knee and thigh level amputation on one leg. The same people are at risk of getting amputation on the other leg. The number one reason for amputation is diabetes-related peripheral vascular disease (PAD) blockages. If you're a diabetic, please make sure your diabetes is in control. Diabetes management is critical to amputation prevention. Diabetics should have a team of doctors to help with this process including a cardiologist, a podiatrist, a diabetes specialist and a vascular specialist. Preventing amputation is critical. Here are three tips to consider to prevent amputation. 1. SEE A VASCULAR SPECIALIST. If you have symptoms like pain, discomfort, achiness or an open diabetic foot ulcer that has not healed, please seek immediate medical attention. Get checked by a vascular surgeon so that way we can make sure it's not due to a vascular issue. 2. ANNUAL DIABETIC FOOT EXAMS. If you are diabetic, please make sure you are seeing your podiatrist for an annual foot exam because it's essential that they look at your feet, check your pulse, and clip your toenails. 3. DO NOT CUT YOUR OWN TOENAILS IF YOU ARE DIABETIC. Do not try to cut your toenails yourself if you have diabetes because if you cause an infection or an injury that may not heal, it can lead to much larger consequences.
