From forest to packaging: why traceability matters for a sustainable future. Why sustainable forest management and traceability are the foundation for the materials of tomorrow. Tom Symons works at Metsä Board, a leading producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards including folding boxboards, food service boards and white kraftliners and part of the Metsä Group — a cooperative of thousands of forest owners who have sustainably managed their forests for generations. According to Tom, the journey toward low-carbon materials starts in the forest, where sustainable management enables paperboard, energy and materials with a lower climate impact. “As a result, we plant 33 million trees every year.” Metsä Group uses every part of the tree, because responsible use of raw materials is essential for the future. The trunk goes into construction and wood products, while the top is used for pulp and paperboard and the remaining streams for bioenergy. As a result, the company reduces its CO₂ emissions and relies on renewable materials. Sustainability requires certainty. That is why Metsä places strong emphasis on traceability throughout the entire supply chain. With PEFC certification, materials remain traceable from forest to end product, so customers can be confident that the wood and paperboard come from sustainably managed forests. In this Wood for Tomorrow video, http://houtvoormorgen.nl, Tom explains why certified forest management and a transparent supply chain are not the end point, but the starting point for building a better world for tomorrow. 👉 *Learn more about sustainable paperboard for packaging: https://pefc.nl/papier/*
