The Role of Telepsychiatry in Primary Care presented by Justyna Wojas, MD on May 22, 2018. One in five children experience mental illness and only about 20% of those children receive treatment. Average delay between onset and intervention for children is about eight to ten years. For families that seek treatment, up to 50% terminate prematurely secondary to lack of access, financial/transportation difficulties and stigma associated with mental health providers. 70% of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders are seen in pediatrician’s office with ADHD as the most prevalent parent reported diagnosis, followed by behavioral problems, anxiety and depression. Due to the disparity in the availability of the mental health providers and the rising rates of mental health conditions in the American youth, the importance of primary care physicians in treating and coordinating care will become vital. The use of telepsychiatry for children with behavioral health conditions, may be a vital tool for primary care physicians to use, especially in rural areas. This webinar recording presentation focused on delivery of mental health/behavioral health services through telepsychiatry, office and technical set up, selecting an appropriate patient for this type of delivery of care, expectations, current models/available resources, benefits and limitations of this delivery of care.
