About the piece: "After years of being on the road together, the cello and I had moved firmly into separate bedrooms during the pandemic. Not really on speaking terms. Then suddenly, from out of the blissful silence, a commission landed from Spitalfields Festival: to write and perform a solo cello piece for their “Bach Rework’d” festival…. . A raucous response to Bach’s iconic G major prelude, “G-lude” is a wild visceral catharsis of shrieks, gasps, scrapes and howls that ghosts the harmonic architecture of the original. The delicate string resonance central to all the cello suites is here blown up in distorted overtone clouds, finally exhausting itself and coming to rest within the stillness of the Prelude’s opening chord sequence, here outlined in harmonic pizzicatos. Ultimately, a peaceful working out of my complex relationship to the instrument at the very point of transforming from performer to composer." - ZM Commissioned by Spitalfields Festival for “Bach Rework’d”.
