Explore the scope and scale of the 1974 floods, which hit much of South East Queensland. The overall damage bill was close to $1billion. Australia Day, 1974, Brisbane was struck by Tropical Cyclone Wanda causing the banks of Stanley, Bremer and Brisbane Rivers to break, flooding the surrounding suburbs. Continual, heavy rain had fallen for three weeks, leading up to the flood, which occurred on Sunday, 27 January 1974, during the Australia Day weekend. The floods peaked at 6.6 metres at 2:15 am on 29 January. The peak flooding in the location of the city was approximately 5.5 metres (18 ft).
