It belongs to the muscles of mastication (chewing muscles) and is involved in the movements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Like the other mastication muscles, the lateral pterygoid muscle is innervated by the trigeminal nerve, more precisely the lateral pterygoid nerve from the mandibular nerve. The muscle has two heads: a superior and an inferior head, with different origins and insertions.
