In August 1887, Ingrid Skarstad arrived at her dead husband's claim in the Black Hills with nine dollars, two young sons, and a cabin with walls you could see daylight through. Every neighbor told her the same thing: you need five cords of firewood to survive winter. She couldn't cut one. Gunnar Holstad, who'd survived eleven Dakota winters, warned her directly: "A cave is a grave. You'll freeze, and those boys will freeze with you." She built a shelter inside the cave anyway—double walls stuffed with straw, a tiny stove, canvas lining. The limestone held steady at fifty degrees year-round while the world above dropped to thirty-eight below. On January 6, 1888, the temperature plunged and stayed deadly for ten days. Children froze in schoolyards. Families burned furniture. Eleven neighbors came pounding on Ingrid's cave door, begging for shelter. She let every one of them inside.
