Agios Lavrentios is a village of the Magnesia Regional Unit. It is built on the southern slopes of Pelion at an altitude of 600 m and at a distance of 19 km east from Volos, between the villages of Drakeia and Agios Georgios. The stream Vrychonas flows near the village. Today's Saint Lawrence is a vibrant community that honors its past, but is also interested in its future. Drink a refreshing beer in the village square under the cool plane trees and stay in a traditional guest house overlooking Pagasitikos. Agios Lavrentios is more than just a traditional village in Pelion. To really get to know this place, you have to meet the villagers, walk its cobbled streets and breathe its fresh air. At the end of the 14th century, an Agioreite monk, Lavrentios, left the iconic Monastery of the Great Lavra on Mount Athos and headed towards Thessaly, specifically towards the mountains, ending up at a location about 20 kilometers away from Volos. A place with a magnificent view where the only thing that existed was a small monastery built by Benedictine monks. At that point he built his monastery, right on the foundations of the old one, giving his name to the small settlement that gradually began to grow to become one of the most beautiful and popular villages of western Pelion. There was no strong Ottoman rule in the area, so the little village of the monk Lavrentiou began to flourish economically, maintaining a relative autonomy that, combined with the ever-growing population, created a place that was self-sufficient and quiet, peaceful and idyllic. Slowly more and more powerful people began to take an interest in this puppet village, whose inhabitants were engaged in commercial and craft activities , with several wealthy Greeks from the diaspora arriving in Agios Lavrentios with the goal of a new life. From the 17th to the 18th century, several scholars and artists, teachers and priests lived in the settlement, who made up an extremely educated local community. At the same time, many schools and libraries operated in the village, with the result that Agios Lavrentios is an excellent example of a settlement with an agricultural and livestock character, but a thoroughly urban consciousness. The most affluent residents of the village built here imposing mansions that housed the great celebrations and events of the place. You will see them in many different parts of the settlement, going up the cobbled streets to admire the wonderful view, towering impressively and beautifully, in truly amazing condition, as if they were built only a short time ago. It is these wonderful houses together with the fantastic central square of the village and, of course, the historic fountains that you will find in every corner of St. Lawrence (20 in total, stone or marble), which make up a place that is completely authentic, a cool refuge for every season of the year. Around the village a dense forest with chestnuts, beeches and countless olives will make you feel like you are wandering in a place truly cut off from any suspicion of urban tension and crowding where greenery prevails and the beauty of nature has the first and last word. The monastery Without a doubt the most famous sight of the village, the monastery of Agios Lavrentiou , above the picturesque settlement of Pelion, has been standing in the same spot since the end of the 14th century, built on the foundations of a much older monastery. No trip to Agios Lavrentios is complete without a stop there for a dose of history in a building that has undergone significant renovations over the years, but always retains its original character. Equally unique is the view, from an altitude of 600 meters, in itself a good reason to visit the monastery. In the monastery, a big festival is held every year, on August 10 , attracting a lot of people to the village even in the summer. The square An emblematic point of the village and the central square Hatzini . All the tourist traffic of the settlement is gathered there: traditional shops, cafes and restaurants with very good food offer an unobstructed view to the mountain of the Centaurs and Drakeia , the village directly opposite. If there is only one reason why Agios Lavrentios consistently attracts so many visitors to Pelion every year then it is probably none other than this wonderful square, a typical example of a Greek mountain village, where you will feel that time has stopped and life is flowing slower and more substantial.
