Video opens with Willow on the nest. She reacts to crows and a Red-shouldered Hawk arriving. Gus is on the job, flying to the nest tree to flush the crows and hawk. Willow protects her egg, and Gus protects Willow. The hawk(s) and crows are defending their territory, just as Great Horned Owls will do. Video covers the crows and hawk(s) continuing to pester the owls for a bit before leaving. The pestering is an attempt to get the owls to leave. Owls predate other birds, as many birds do, so it is understandable why the birds pester the owls. Additional info in the time stamps below. The two most asked questions are how long will Willow incubate before giving up, and will there be a second cluth. We will have to watch to see what Willow and Gus do. The egg may deteriorate, ending incubation. As Willow takes more time off the egg, the egg may be predated by any number of animals/birds. During the daytime, the crows are often around, so they are most likely to try. Snakes, raccoons, opossums, and squirrels may also predate an egg; however, they have not been an issue at the nest. A second clutch is possible, but less likely than if the egg was lost early on. We will watch to see if they work for a second clutch, after incubation ends. Time stamps below, if interested. Here is the Tickcounter for the egg, made for us by LadyDeeagle55: https://www.tickcounter.com/countup/4... Digestion in Owls: https://www.owlpages.com/owls/article... Great Horned Owl: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/G... Gular fluttering: With the warm Florida temperatures, the owls use gular fluttering to keep cool/thermoregulate. Gular fluttering uses open mouth breathing, rapidly vibrating the moist membranes, which causes evaporation and heat loss. Time Stamps: Provided in DVR time; actual time is on the cam clock. 00:00. Season 8 - Nest History 1-11-26 0409. Willow lays egg #1 (single egg season) 2-18-26 Day 38; egg #1 is past the hatch window 11-30-25: This is the eagle nest of Bald Eagles Blaze and Skye, located in SW Florida. Blaze is not here this season (has not been seen in months), and Skye has not yet bonded with a new male. There have been multiple eagles of varying ages in the territory, and some chasing between males vying for the territory. Without a bonding/bonded eagle pair, the nest was not being used by eagles. There are six cams with amazing views, including two cams with views of the water. Multiple species of birds can be seen on a daily basis, as well as alligators, turtles, and the cattle on the farm. Varying ages of eagles are seen on a daily basis, perching, fishing, bathing, and going about their daily activity. If you have not seen the Eagle Country cams, please check them out! The live chat is open 24/7 on the nest cam with an excellent team of moderators. This is a great place to learn about eagle behavior!
