The Elephant District Restaurant held this Thai New Year event/beer launch on April 15th. Thai New Year, known as Songkran was celebrated from April 13-15 in Thailand with festivities including massive water fights. New York City’s Elephant District (9 Old Fulton Street in Dumbo, Brooklyn) brings the street food of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River to the banks of the East River. The launch event featured some very special Thai craft beers as well as new menu items from Executive Chef Ekapol “Top” Aranyawikul. Special Songkran dishes served included Northeastern style Som Tum Pla-ra Kung Sod: shredded green papaya mixed with a spicy dressing made from lime juice, chili, and pla ra (fermented fish sauce), and raw shrimp; Khanom Jeen Gang Kheaw Wan, green chicken curry with rice noodles; and Pad Kra Thiam, stir fried garlic shrimp crowned with a fried egg served with prik nam pla, the ubiquitous Thai condiment of birdseye chilies in fish sauce. Co-owner and resident mixologist Sayparn “Patty” Wongsak has created a special Songkran cocktail, the May Sa Mojito–May Sa means April–consisting of Mekhong Thai rum, mint, lime, and Jasmine flavored Hale’s Blue Boy Syrup. The latter is a summertime staple for shaved ice and cool drinks during Songkran, which falls during the Thailand’s hottest month. Kanom from Pastry Chef Jamikorn “Kay” Masathien include Ho Mok Mamuang aka Thai Mango crepe roll and Thai Tea Tiramisu. The festivities continued with the East Coast launch of three of Thailand’s top craft beers, being brewed in America for the first time by Group B USA. Each brew–Yodbeer Bearnana Wit, one of Thailand’s top-selling wheat beers so named because it is made with dried bananas and has a unique caramelized banana flavor; Pheebok Beer’s Sawasdee IPA, an approachable mildly bitter ale; and Samakkee Lager, a crisp, easy-drinking beer with a balance of sweetness and subtle bitterness–were paired with Songkran specials and other tasty surprises.
