In 1957 Winnipeg guitarist Jim Pirie met Lenny Breau when the teenagers were performing country music in different bands on CKY Radio in Winnipeg. They became good friends and jammed and exchanged musical ideas regularly until about 1965 when Jim moved to Toronto. Both played much session work on CBC TV and Radio in the early/mid 1960s but never worked on a show together until they were asked to do a special appearance on pianist Jose Poneira's show 'A Song For You' in 1964. The two young guitarists enlisted their good friend Ron Halldorson who was bassist in the classic Lenny Breau Trio of the 1960s but also played jazz guitar. (On top of this, Halldorson was a "boy wonder" virtuoso pedal steel player who began performing professionally on the instrument in his early teens). Each guitarist contributed one arrangement which they played as a trio on the show. Lenny and Jim also played a Flamenco piece and the trio backed Poneira on his Latin-esque version of 'What's New'. In 2000, Jim Pirie was interviewed about Lenny Breau and discussed the making of this show, particularly Lenny's arrangement of the Days of Wine and Roses which Lenny created in his head before teaching the parts to Ron and Jim. He also talks about Lenny's creative approach to playing Bach on the guitar. 1. Excerpt from Jim Pirie Interview (July 2000-Toronto) 2.
