Third Year Recital Examination featuring soprano Rhian Tuohy with pianist Andrea Katz at the Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music, 5th November, 2014. The poem ‘Down by the Salley Gardens’ is a poem by well known Irish poet William Butler Yeats published in The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems in 1889. These beautiful, simple words have inspired a number of musical settings by composers including Ivor Gurney, John Ireland and Benjamin Britten. This version, set to music by Rebecca Clarke, emphasises the simplicity of the text with a sparse piano accompaniment. Down by the Salley Gardens my love and I did meet She passed the Salley Gardens with little snow white feet. She bid me take love easy as the leaves grow on the tree But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree. In a field by the river my love and I did stand And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow white hand. She bid me take life easy as the grass grows on the weirs. But I was young and foolish and now am full of tears.
