New Endovascular Operating Suite at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP)

Dr. Benjamin Jackson, an assistant professor of surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, discusses the new endovascular operating suite at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). This suite is the culmination of more than 12 months of collaborative research and development by a team of anesthesiologists, nurses, radiologists and vascular surgeons. This endovascular operating suite gives Penn Medicine the ability to take care of the full range of vascular diseases efficiently and safely. In this angiographic suite, Penn Medicine physicians treat the full range of patients with vascular diseases including those with aortic aneurysms, thoracic aortic aneurysms, carotid artery stenosis, having suffered strokes or mini strokes, and people with peripheral arterial disease. Prior to the inception of this operating room, patients would have to go to three or four places in the hospital to have the same diagnostic and therapeutic interventions performed. Now, patients at Penn Medicine can have those same procedures completed more safely, efficiently, and in a more timely fashion in one angiographic suite. Patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms come into the emergency department and in some cases only have minutes to live. Penn Medicine physicians can bring them up to this operating room and perform a CT scan immediately. The anesthesiologists are here to take care of them and support them and resuscitate them. The vascular surgeons are here to perform intervascular stent grafting to treat the aneurysm and save lives.
