Couching is a classic goldwork fill technique that once you know what it is, you’ll be able to recognise it in many historical goldwork embroidery pieces. The finished look of a couched piece can be simple or can look very complicated depending on how you bend it to your will. Part of the beauty of couching is that you can apply it to any goldwork thread or combination of threads you like. Varying the colours, sizes and textures of the threads being couched will allow you to build up different effects to best suit your outcome. Japanese thread, Elizabethan Twist, Passing thread and Roccoco all suit couching greatly as it shows them off to their best effect without compromising the thread itself or working it to hard. With these sort of gold threads, they can be quite delicate and easy to damage so couching them where they are able to just sit on the surface of the piece is ideal. Although we are talking about couching in a goldwork sense here, it's a really useful tool in the embroiderers box of tricks as it can be used to lay any kind of thread that might not survive passing through the fabric countless times, or is too thick and would overstress the fabric instead. Another way of adding interest into your couching is to add a break into a closed shape so that you form a pattern within the shape, which can be great for organic subjects in particular. Play around with where you put the break and how many breaks there are for a range of effects.
