One of the ways we improve care is by training the next generation of clinician-scientists. Our three-year Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program gives fellows the skills and experience to understand and diagnose kidney disorders and translate science into new therapies. Stuart Goldstein, MD, Associate Director, Division of Nephrology: “We want to train the next leaders not just in clinical care, but in advancing the science of nephrology care. And for us, we’re very fortunate. We can provide a training experience in research in clinical medicine, translational medicine, basic science, and we can leverage the infrastructure and resources here for quality improvement, and healthcare outcomes research that I don’t think is replicated in any fellowship program in the United States.” We offer comprehensive training in an international referral center that sees more than 4,600 patients a year. Our instruction goes beyond the bedside. We’ll teach you how to manage units, prepare grants and strive for the best outcomes. Francisco Flores, MD, Clinical Director: “I always say that it took a lot for a surfer living in Florida to move to Ohio. But one of the things that interested me the most was the incredible expertise that you will find in this institution and in particular in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology.” Stefanie Benoit, MD, MPH, Clinical Lab Director: “I didn’t come from the Midwest. So when my husband and I chose to do our training in Cincinnati and stay in Cincinnati, a huge part of that was the – I guess it’s a Midwestern culture. Hierarchy exists, but every door is open. I would say the culture of Cincinnati is collaboration.” And the city affordable and easy to live in, with big-city amenities and little traffic. Dr. Benoit: “I love Cincinnati! Oh, my goodness, ever since we moved here, it has felt like home.” In the medical center, you’ll also get a comfortable and collegiate vibe. Edward Nehus, MD, Fellowship Program Director: “We have a great team of not only physicians but other providers that really provide an environment that fellows can learn, they can do their research and they can prepare themselves for the next step in their career.” David Hooper, MD, Transplant Director: “This is a pretty amazing place to practice medicine. The best way I can explain that is I came here from out of state 17 years ago. I promised my wife that, ah, we’d be here for three years and go right back home. And now it’s been 17 years. And the reason is because the training environment, the academic environment, the support for fellowship training and junior faculty development is unparalleled.” Here, you’ll get the full breadth of the clinical spectrum – including rare conditions and end-stage kidney disease. Fellows follow numerous patients receiving dialysis and continue to follow them after they receive a kidney transplant. Along the way, you’ll also learn skills in forming lasting relationships with patients and colleagues. Donna Claes, MD, Medical Director of Dialysis: “One of the first things you’ll notice – very few people wear white coats, and most people go by first names. And so, you can have the world’s leading expert on ‘X,’ and you’re calling them by their first name, not ‘Dr. So-and-So.’” From being part of our in-patient service to our outpatient clinics and research labs, you will experience what makes the pediatric nephrology program at Cincinnati Children’s one of the best in the field. Erica Hughley, MD, Fellow: "It’s one of the best children’s hospitals for a reason. I think we just tend to attract a lot of genuinely good people. It definitely shows in the care that we give patients and also in our work relationships.” This is not a place where fellows work for attendings. It’s a place where you’ll work together. Meredith Harris, MD, Fellow: “In nephrology, we’re on the front lines. We see the most patients. We are kind of in the trenches the most. And so, I think they very much value our opinions and what we want and what we need.” And the respect goes both ways. Hillarey Stone, DO, Fellow: “The faculty here are amazing. We work with some of the leaders and experts that are respected throughout the country and throughout the world. And despite that, no one’s ever been intimidating to me.
