Is CarGuru’s the best place to shop for used cars online? My name is Eric Smith and I’m the General Sales Manager here at Larry H Miller Subaru. I like to share tips that will allow you to have a better car buying experience. Car gurus is an online classifieds site. It’s a relative new comer to the space when it’s compared to the OG’s like AutoTrader and Cars.com Like those other sites CarGuru’s have millions of car listings across the country. What set them apart was the price guidance Fair price, good price, great price CarGuru’s was born in the internet age unlike Autotrader. They burst on the scene and were dominating in Google search results. They were doing so good so fast there was some speculation they were manipulating the system. I don’t know what they were doing behind the scenes but Google didn’t like it. So in 2019 Google made some updates to there algorithm and Cargurus has a nearly 49% drop in first place search rankings nearly overnight. Even with the big drop in search Rankings carGurus is still one of the top sites to search for vehicles for online. What sets CarGuru’s apart was primarily 2 Things 1 - Is the Fair, Good, Great price guidance they use to rank vehicle values in any given market (Similar to auto traders fair market vaule) 2- When CarGurus started they were consumer focused classified site. Meaning they site visitors search results based on price and location… This is still the case for the most part. However, like any business they need to make money. So they now sell sponsored listings to dealerships. These posts will appear at the top of search bars similar to that ads you find at the top of your Google search. The question you have to ask yourself is. Can you get a “great” deal on the wrong car. The Cargurus algorithm seems to weight “price” as the only factor in determining what a great deal is. For example let’s say you’re looking for a 2020 Subaru Outback in Idaho. You find a Great Deal determined by Carguru’s prices $1,398 below the market. Once you dig into the listing you find the vehicle has been on the lot for 340 days, it has two accidents on the Carfax and no service records available. It’s at an independent dealership so you know it hasn’t been inspected by factory trained techs. It’s not often in life the cheapest option is the best option. With pre-owned vehicles the more you know about the car the better off you are. I like Cargurus. I think it’s a great place to include in your car search. Consider this strategy- Shop CarGurus and find some great and good deals on vehicle you are interested in. Then shop these vehicles on the Carfax site or buy the Carfax for the vehicle you’re most interested in. Look at the vehicle on the actual dealers sight. Check there Google and Facebook ratings. Ask for a copy of that dealers inspection of the vehicle and records of what they fixed. Ask for a price quote to identify any hidden fees. When you arm yourself with this type of information you can decide for your self if this vehicle is a great deal.
