Preformed for the Namba Performing Space 10th Anniversary Celebration. Song was finished about a week earlier. First time played in public. (I expect future versions will be a bit more polished.) Lyrics are my interpretation of the first chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna's Despair. LYRICS: Sun Beats down on desert sand I hear the trumpets sound Solders draw their arrows in their bows Drumbeats echo through the land And through a crack in parched and barren ground There blooms a single desert rose When the faces of my brothers fall before my bow What hollow victory will there still remain? I do not hate my enemies, I don’t despise my foes For win or lose, it leads us all to pain From the darkness of night Comes the heat of the day Will I lead them to fight Will I just turn away? When I was just a boy I played at war with my friends Here beneath the pale blue sky Those friends and kinsmen now, are on both sides and burn for war Some have come to kill, some have come to die You say, “Have no fear of killing for there is no death,” Yes, That is what you taught me to believe For you, past lives glow like burning embers Why then, do I not remember? Is it so I can forget to grieve? In the night I was dreaming of a coal black crow Was it a god or a demon? I don’t know The dharma and the karma Devas and believers Make it seem like I’m a clown inside a minstrel show All that we have loved and all that we have learned Sacrificed in battle to what end? Shed our bodies like old clothes Then what becomes of what we know? And, what will die? What will transcend? If I charge ahead to fight And the dark be vanquished by the light What then will there be left to defend? From the darkness of night Comes the heat of the day Will I lead them to fight? Shall I just fade away? Sun beats down on desert sand The sky, so pale and blue Soldiers wait for my command. Above fly coal black crows Armies face each other down Oh, drive my chariot between the two That I may see the eyes of those Who join that desert rose
