An Eala Bhàn (The White Swan) is perhaps the most iconic Gaelic poem of the Great War. Written by the "Bard of North Uist," Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna, while he was in the trenches of the Somme, it is a heartbreaking address to his sweetheart back in Scotland. Many will know this piece through the beautiful rendition by Julie Fowlis@juliefowlismusic My brother and I were privileged to hear Julie perform 'An Eala Bhàn' at the centenary commemoration of the Battle of the Somme at the Thiepval Memorial in 2016. Her rendition was so hauntingly beautiful that it still gives me chills and brings a tear to my eye when I listen to it now. Nobody could possibly top such an incredible performance and I certainly won't inflict my singing voice on you, so I am just going to recite it here as best I can in Gàidhlig. I hope I have done it justice. My grandmother was a Gàidhlig speaker from the Hebrides and I dedicate this reading to her and my grandfather, who was from Passage East, Co. Waterford, and was fortunate to survive the Somme. I am dedicated to preserving these Gaelic gems and classic verses.
